IRAS and Street and Building Names Board (SBNB) have launched the Property Name and Address digital service in 2023. This digital service aims to provide greater convenience for users to apply for house and unit number and street and building names on the same platform.

Role of IRAS in House and Unit Number Allotment

IRAS has the authority to allocate and amend house and unit numbers of any property under the Property Tax Act.

Importance of Proper Numbering and Unique Addresses

Houses and buildings are numbered to help with identification. Property developers, owners, or representatives must seek IRAS’ authorization for the use of unique property addresses and ensure that every house and unit number is clearly displayed. Please note that using an unauthorized house or unit number is considered an offence under the Property Tax Act.

Guidelines for House and Unit Numbering

A house address comprises
[House Number] [Street Name] [# Unit Number, if any] Singapore [Postal Code]

House and unit numbers play an important role in helping emergency personnel, delivery services, and the public to locate properties efficiently.

A suitable house/unit number should:

  • Be relevant to the street where the main entrance or the main building frontage is located
  • Adhere to the current building and street sequence
  • Prevent confusion with other buildings or units in different parts of Singapore
Applicants are encouraged to refer to the handbook below for clarity on the house and unit number guidelines.

Application Procedure

Property developers, owners, or representatives can apply for house and unit numbers via the Property Name and Address Digital Service. It is important to have the necessary information and documents ready before making an application. Upon receipt of complete information, the processing will take 4 weeks. Once the application has been approved, IRAS will issue a Certificate of Numbering (CON) indicating the list of allotted house and/ or unit number(s).

FAQs

House and Unit Numbers

Do I need to display the allotted address?

Property owners are required to display the house/unit number prominently. Failure to display the assigned number or displaying an unassigned number is considered an offence under the Property Tax Act.

The house/unit number should be marked or displayed as outlined in the Property Tax (Property Numbers) Regulations of the Property Tax Act.

You may refer to the display guidelines in the House and/or Unit Number Handbook.

Do I need to inform IRAS when a house/unit number is no longer required?

The property developers, owners, or representatives are required to submit an application for the withdrawal of a house/unit number when it is no longer required. In situations where a building has been demolished, the house number as well as any unit number(s) will become invalid and should therefore be withdrawn.

I have recently purchased a property and would like to change the house number to "88" as this number is available. How can I apply for this change?

We would like to explain that house numbers are allotted based on the general principles of ascending order (e.g. 2,4,6 or 1,3,5 etc) and sequence with the existing house numbers along the same street. We will not omit or skip house numbers when there are sufficient house numbers available for allocation.

How do I retrieve the Certificate of Numbering (CON)?

The applicant has to login through our digital service to download the CON within 30 days from the day the application is approved.

In the event that you require a copy of the CON issued previously, you have to submit a search request with the property details. The search fee of $20 per property is applicable.

How do I check for existing house numbers along the same street on OneMap?

You may search for your intended address (e.g. 55 Newton Road) using the address search bar at the top in OneMap. In the event if the address exists, it will show you the location of the building.
