Tax filing made easier for 1.7 million individuals
IRAS would like to remind all taxpayers, including sole-proprietors and partners to e-File their individual income tax returns by 18 Apr 2011, or send in their paper returns by 15 Apr 2011.
Close to 1.7 million taxpayers will have to file their tax returns this year. All will be able to benefit from the ease of e-Filing at myTax Portal, the IRAS’ e-Filing gateway. About 65% of them, or 1.1 million taxpayers, will enjoy even greater convenience, with fewer mouse clicks. This is because they do not have to provide their employment income information to IRAS; their employers have already done so for them under the Auto-inclusion Scheme for Employment Income.
This year, e-Filing has been enhanced with a tax calculator feature. As soon as taxpayers have e-Filed, an estimate of the tax payable will be shown on the screen; this helps them budget their tax payments.
By now, about 790,000, or 72% of the 1.1 million taxpayers would have received the “No-Filing Service” (NFS) letters from IRAS. For this group of taxpayers, if they do not have additional income to declare and do not have any change to their personal reliefs, they do not even have to log into myTax Portal to file their tax. If they are also on the GIRO instalment plan, it means no action is required of them at all for this filing season.
Taxpayers who pay their taxes by GIRO stand to win cash prizes totaling $ 65,000 in the May 2011 GIRO lucky draw --- the first lucky draw during the 3-year GIRO promotion period from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2013. The longer one stays on GIRO, the higher the chances of winning the cash prizes.
For those who have not signed up for GIRO, they should do so quickly. All new successful GIRO applications as of 30 Apr 2011 will have a chance to win cash prizes in the May 2011 “GIRO Your Tax” Lucky Draw.

File Early. Avoid Last-Minute Rush
Taxpayers are reminded to file early to avoid the last-minute rush and penalties for late filing. Last year, 80,000 taxpayers had to pay fines of up to $1,000 each because they did not file their returns by the due date.
