Taxpayers can approach IRAS to discuss their income tax payment plan
We refer to the letter "Taxman's deferment - 'Stretch payment over 24 months'" (25 Jan 09) by Mr Nicholas Joshua Law. Under the Defer GIRO scheme, taxpayers (who are on GIRO instalment payments) can choose to defer their income tax instalment payment for three months (from May to Jul 2009) on their income tax payable for Year of Assessment 2009. The aim of this new scheme is to help taxpayers who face temporary short-term cash flow difficulties during the economic downturn.
Taxpayers who face difficulties in paying their taxes because they have lost their jobs or for other reasons, and find that the Defer GIRO scheme does not meet their needs, can approach IRAS to discuss their income tax payment plan. IRAS can defer their tax payment (up to 6 months) or spread their instalment plan over a longer period (up to 24 months). They can call IRAS on 1800 356 8300 or send an email to [email protected].
